A note on tracking codes:

In some cases, there is more than one open position for a particular job and there may be two different tracking codes.  That usually occurs when one of the positions is "represented" and the other is "non-represented."  You may apply for either one or separately for both.

Veterinary Research Support Technical Staff (NEIDL Tech) 

Required based on level:

  • Research Support Assistant (grade 46)– Minimum 3 years of lab animal related experience, BS, CVT, ALAT preferred

  • Research Support Technician (grade 47)– Minimum 5 years of lab animal related experience with 1 year as Veterinary Technician or equivalent, BS, CVT, LAT preferred

  • Research Support Specialist (grade 48) – Minimum 7 years of lab animal related experience with 1 year as Veterinary Technician or equivalent, BS, CVT, LATg preferred. BSL4 experience or experience as study coordinator required

Located at the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) Max Containment Facility, the Animal Research Services (ARS) team is hiring at the levels of Assistant, Technician, and Specialist.  

Join a motivated, innovative team dedicated to providing safe and humane husbandry, technical, and research support for a variety of laboratory animals to promote the study and mitigation of infectious diseases. Receive unique biocontainment training with opportunities for continuing education and growth. Will perform these duties at BioSafety Levels 2, 3 & 4. 

Previous experience working with animals is required.  BS, CVT, ALAT or higher preferred.

 

Essential functions include: 

  • Strict adherence to the BIOSAFETY PROGRAM, including: strictly follow all procedures necessary to maintain animal housing areas including room or facility personnel entry; use of personnel protective equipment (PPE including PAPR & containment suit), decontamination of all equipment and material moving into controlled areas 

  • ANIMAL HUSBANDRY, including health monitoring and cagewash 

  • Comprehensive SURGICAL SUPPORT responsibilities including veterinary nursing 

  • Perform and comply with SELECT AGENT PROGRAM 

  • Technical responsibilities including TECHNICAL RESEARCH SUPPORT 

  • TRAINING AND DOCUMENT DEVELOPMENT, including the ability to train peers and contribute to program development and refinement 

ANIMAL CARE TECHNICIAN

Required:

Perform a variety of tasks related to the care of the Animal Science Center’s laboratory animals and the maintenance of the animal facilities. Some species included are mice, rats, zebrafish, zebra finches, and more. Technicians can be rotated across facilities and at times assigned specifically to facilities needing coverage.

Responsibilities include

  • Provides feed and water, and basic husbandry care

  • Cleans and sanitizes cages according to prescribed standards

  • Observes animals daily to assess health, environmental conditions, and social environment

  • Maintains accurate and up to date cage cards, animal histories, and other records as required

  • Receives and houses newly arrived animals from approved vendors according to established procedures

  • Maintains housing rooms, storage areas, and procedure rooms daily including sweeping and mopping floors, sanitizing equipment

  • Practices safety, environmental, and biosecurity control methods

  • Completes duties as assigned in both ABSL-1 and ABSL-2 facilities

Aquatics Facility Technician

Temporary paid student position

Boston University Animal Science Center AQUATICS RESEARCH FACILITY is pleased to announce the opening of one position for a summer worker at our zebrafish facility on our Medical School Campus for the Summer 2024 term.

 

The individual hired to fill this temporary position will receive training from our aquatics husbandry staff, and will be responsible for:

  • Daily husbandry for a multi-species research aquarium

  • Routine water quality monitoring

  • Live feed cultivation

  • Tank and facility maintenance

  • Other tasks as assigned

 

Consideration is granted to all undergraduate and graduate students with a strong interest in marine science or related field.  Application will close after April 15, 2024. Please choose "Summer or Part-time role" on our contact form.

Mouse Facility Technician

Temporary paid student position

Boston University Animal Science Center RODENT RESEARCH FACILITY is pleased to announce the opening of a small number of positions for summer workers at our animal facility on our Medical School Campus for the Summer 2024 term.

 

The individual hired to fill this temporary position will receive training from our rodent husbandry staff, and will be responsible for:

  • Daily husbandry for mice, including feeding and cage changing

  • Routine health monitoring and communication with the Veterinary Services team

  • Other tasks as assigned
